Reduced-Emission Train Fleets

Northern Trains has initiated an ambitious fleet renewal program aimed at modernizing its fleet with up to 450 new, sustainable trains. This initiative is a significant step towards enhancing travel across the Northern network and aligning with the UK's net-zero emissions target. The program involves replacing older diesel multiple units (DMUs) with electric-only and bi-mode trains that can convert to battery operation over their lifetime. This approach addresses the limited electrification of the Northern network, which currently covers only 25% of the routes. The first phase will focus on replacing Class 150, 155, and 156 DMUs, as well as introducing 12 three-car electric multiple units (EMUs) on the newly electrified Transpennine Route.

The fleet renewal program underscores Northern Trains' commitment to sustainability and innovation. By collaborating with leading manufacturers such as Alstom, CAF, Hitachi, Siemens Mobility, and Stadler, Northern Trains aims to streamline operations, reduce maintenance costs, and improve overall efficiency. The transition to modern, eco-friendly trains is expected to enhance passenger comfort and connectivity between key cities while significantly reducing the environmental impact of rail travel. The project's timeline anticipates framework agreements by 2026, with train deliveries beginning in 2030. This comprehensive modernization effort is poised to transform the passenger experience and contribute to long-term environmental goals.
