The Staten Island Ferry, in collaboration with NYC Ferry, has recently begun testing renewable diesel fuel as an eco-friendly alternative to traditional diesel. As part of New York City’s broader sustainability initiatives, this transition is expected to "reduce carbon emissions by 60% or more, providing nearly 30 million annual passengers with a cleaner mode of transportation across New York City’s waterways."

To begin, the New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) launched the pilot program on the Marchi Staten Island Ferry, where "renewable diesel is being used in place of the Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel that currently powers the fleet; with plans to extend this environmentally responsible fuel to the entire Staten Island Ferry fleet by 2025, NYC DOT is on track to meet its target of reducing CO₂ emissions by 50% by 2030."
