Welch’s Transport has launched a groundbreaking initiative in collaboration with Innovate UK, Syselek, and the University of Cambridge, aimed at driving sustainable innovation in freight logistics. The initiative, known as ENROUTE (Efficient Network for Road-freight Optimisation, Utilisation, and Transfer of Energy), focuses on enhancing the operational efficiency of electric heavy goods vehicles (eHGVs) through strategic data sharing. By implementing real-time data sharing across the value chain, the project aims to facilitate better decision-making and improve overall fleet efficiency, thereby supporting the transition to low-carbon freight operations.

The ENROUTE initiative addresses the urgent need for scalable and efficient solutions to support sustainable energy use and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the freight industry. The project involves mapping the existing landscape to identify opportunities for data sharing, building a robust business case for the economic and environmental benefits, and implementing a proof-of-concept to demonstrate the viability of the approach. Innovative strategies, such as anonymisation techniques and advanced security measures, are employed to ensure data security and confidentiality, making the initiative a model for sustainable logistics operations.
