Isabel Díaz Ayuso, the President of the Community of Madrid, has announced a new initiative called the Última Milla — which translates to the Last Mile — project, which aims to incorporate Metro de Madrid into the logistics sector. This innovative plan intends to utilize underground trains for transporting goods to help alleviate urban pollution and reduce traffic congestion caused by delivery vehicles. The project is set to commence shortly on the MetroSur line, with plans to expand to Line 3 later in the year.

The pilot phase, executed in collaboration with GLS Spain, will facilitate the movement of approximately 5,000 parcels daily, utilizing dedicated Metro de Madrid trains that operate outside of peak passenger hours. The goods will be collected from specific stations, where they will be monitored by Metro staff until they are handed over to the courier service for final delivery. A second phase of testing will involve a partnership with CITYlogin, focusing on the distribution of parcels to Madrid's low-emission zones via sustainable transport methods.
