Lower-Carbon Alternative Fuels
Clariant's MegaMax Project will Create Green Methanol
Debra John — November 8, 2024Clariant’s MegaMax catalyst technology is spearheading one of the world’s largest green e-methanol projects, aimed at producing cleaner fuel alternatives. In collaboration with "European Energy A/S, this project will use MegaMax to synthesize e-methanol from hydrogen and capture CO₂ at a Denmark-based facility; expected to produce 32,000 tons annually, this output could fuel a large container ship with methanol dual-fuel engines for a year."
E-methanol, produced using renewable energy, offers significant emission reductions and lower sulfur content compared to conventional hydrocarbon fuels, making it an attractive solution for carbon-intensive industries, including shipping, logistics, and manufacturing. As demand grows, prominent companies have already committed to integrating e-methanol into their operations. For instance, "Lego plans to replace fossil-based plastics in its products, Novo Nordisk aims to use e-methanol for eco-friendly medical devices, and Maersk intends to power the world’s first carbon-neutral fleet—demonstrating the versatility and impact of this sustainable fuel option."
