BIG Designs the Makers' KUbe at the University of Kansas
Amy Duong — April 23, 2024Danish architecture firm BIG works together with the faculty at the University of Kansas to unveil the Makers' KUbe building. It is made from mass timber materials and is meant to function as an educational space for the University of Kansas School of Architecture & Design in Lawrence. It is entirely built from wood and to achieve this process, the team used glulam, which is noted glued laminated timber and dowels that are influenced by traditional Japanese joinery methods.
Founder of BIG, Bjarke Ingels speaks about the design, stating "Our design for the consolidated design studios at KU seeks to deploy all aspects of the profession in three distinct interventions: preservation, adaptation and new construction. The Makers' KUbe is conceived as a showcase in timber tectonics, traditional joinery, robotic manufacturing and sustainable materials."
