Bendable Bio-Inspired Materials

The HygroShell is a Self-Constructing Timber Building System

The HygroShell research pavilion, a pioneering project that has been launched by the ITECH Master's program and the Cluster of Excellence IntCDC, exemplifies a revolutionary approach to bio-based design. This full-size, long-spanning shell showcases an innovative construction method, utilizing flat-packed components bent on-site. The design draws insights from data on material behavior over time, incorporating a custom computer workflow for accuracy. This includes factors like wood grain direction and moisture content, which are crucial for shaping and structural strength.

The digital workflow employs advanced techniques for gluing high-moisture boards to a plywood layer. Based on predictive curvature analysis, a curved finger joint link is created using a 7-axis robotic milling setup. The project establishes a global parametric design system, showcasing the intersection of data-driven design and advanced fabrication techniques in architectural innovation.
