Chain-Backed Plant-Based Straws
Starbucks Debuts Biodegradable Plant-Based Straws Using Biopolymer
Kanesa D — December 9, 2024Global coffee retailer Starbucks is delighting eco-conscious consumers with its new biodegradable Green Planet® biopolymer straws recently launched in Japan. Utilizing plant oil instead of oil derivatives, this new launch is apart of the coffee chain's vow to become resource-positive and committed to waste reduction by 2025.
Green Planet® straws are beneficial due to their ability to degrade into CO2 and water through microorganisms. This contributes to a reduction in carbon dioxide, allowing Starbucks to prioritize greener operational strategies. Green Planet® straws are available in 32 Starbucks stores in Okinawa Prefecture, with broader availability for Japanese consumers in 2025. The company is also following this by swapping its Frappuccino® straws for a thicker alternative in 2025.
