The newest desserts on the menu at Starbucks Japan are not just delicious, they're helping to support the chain’s coffee-recycling initiative. In an effort to meet its carbon reduction goals, Starbucks Japan has introduced items that show off the way ingredients have been repurposed in a circular economy. The new Almond Milk Matcha Mousse cake, for example, is a vegan dessert with matcha that's grown using recycled coffee bean grounds from Starbucks stores.

The fact that there are plant-based offerings on the menu is also part of Starbucks' initiative to reduce its carbon footprint. Additionally, the chain is implementing solutions for efficient energy use, recycled building materials and solutions that help to reduce in-store waste. The Greener Store initiative is soon coming to not just Japan but also Chile, the United Kingdom and the United States.
