Starbucks' Borrow a Cup pilot program is kicking off in California for a limited time this year, allowing consumers to opt to have their drinks served in a reusable and returnable cup. There are 12 Starbucks locations in Napa and Petaluma that are participating until late October, permitting customers to collect their drinks and return the packaging to a smart collection bin. As a perk for participating, people will have their cups scanned when returned to the bin so that they can be entered in a prize draw.

The need for sustainable takeaway packaging across the QSR industry has led several brands to explore innovative reusable systems with the aim of not only addressing environmental concerns but also promoting a more sustainable and circular approach to food delivery and consumption.
