Global Sustainable Retail Initiatives
This Starbucks Greener Store Features a Coffee Farm
Debra John — September 18, 2024The 'Starbucks Greener Store' initiative focuses on reducing carbon emissions, water usage, and landfill waste as part of its global expansion. A notable example of this effort is the recently "certified store at Hacienda Alsacia Visitor Center, in Costa Rica which serves as Starbucks' coffee farm and global agronomy headquarters."
In particular, the Alsacia store is designed as an open-air structure and operates entirely on solar power. Furthermore, it features indigenous, low-maintenance plants from Costa Rica and utilizes furniture and textiles sourced from local artisans. Additionally, the store incorporates "electric vehicle (EV) charging stations and includes both a For-Here-Ware program and a Grounds for Your Garden initiative; to complement these features, the store employs a mixed recycling plan that tracks waste diversion on a monthly basis."
Overall, this store illustrates Starbucks' approach to implementing sustainable retail practices, integrating horticulture and technology into its greener stores.
