Target announced that it will launch a new net-zero energy store in Vista, California, that will generate renewable energy through 3,420 solar panels across its roof. In addition, the location will include newly installed carport canopies equipped with solar panels.

In total, the building is expected to produce up to a 10% energy surplus each year that can transmit back to the local power grid. Target applied for a net-zero energy certification from the International Living Future Insitute to make the endeavor official. To further reduce emissions, the building will feature HVAC heating instead of natural gas, as well as carbon dioxide refrigeration. Target will scale the refrigeration system chain-wide by 2040 to reduce its overall emissions by 20%.
