L'Innesto is a new social housing project in Milan designed by Barreca & La Varra. The social housing building will be carbon-neutral through several sustainability measures. Additionally, the housing system will encourage community self-management through its shared spaces.

The building will include 400 apartments, 300 student housing units, and a public green space. The team relies on four key measures to achieve net-zero carbon emissions, including a fourth-generation district heating network that operates at lower temperatures powered by renewable sources. Second, a hybrid timber construction system that uses less carbon-intensive materials will aid the cause. Third, the project includes bioremediation and urban forestry, and the fourth pillar involves promoting active mobility and public transport. All four elements will neutralize the building's emissions in roughly 30 years.
