Carbon Negative Farms
Zero Carbon Farms Offsets its Zero-Carbon Emissions by 10%
Colin Smith — December 17, 2022Zero Carbon Farms is a company that aims to achieve carbon-negative farming, which means offsetting more carbon emissions than it produces. It has built a farm in an old air raid shelter that is powered by 100% renewable energy and grows crops that use less space, water, and time. The company has obtained certification as a Carbon Neutral + Organization, meaning they are net carbon negative and have offset their historic emissions through tree planting initiatives. Currently, the company offsets an additional 10% of its net-zero carbon emissions, certifying it as a carbon-negative farming company.
Zero Carbon Farms also has a sustainability strategy in place to reduce its carbon footprint going forward, including considerations for water, waste, packaging, distribution, and supply chain emissions. It is interested in obtaining additional certifications, including organic certification, but the EU does not currently extend this certification to hydroponics and aquaponics systems, which are the methods used by Zero Carbon Farms. The company is advocating for Controlled Environment Farming to be included in such certifications.
