Low Carbon Fertilizer Alliances

3Degrees Launches a Joint Effort to Cut Agricultural Emissions
Georgia Wray Norsten — March 20, 2025The Low Carbon Fertilizer Alliance is spearheading a shift toward sustainable agriculture by addressing emissions in fertilizer production. Launched by 3Degrees, the alliance unites major food and beverage companies -- including founding members Mars and CF Industries -- to drive impactful reductions in agricultural supply chain emissions.
With fertilizer manufacturing responsible for 2.6 gigatonnes of CO₂ emissions annually, surpassing the shipping and aviation sectors combined, the alliance provides a scalable approach to decarbonization. A key initiative includes CF Industries’ new emissions abatement project in Verdigris, Oklahoma, expected to cut 600,000 metric tons of CO₂ annually through nitric acid production improvements.
The alliance ensures transparency by funding emissions reduction projects and providing reporting frameworks for sustainability claims while creating meaningful industry-wide change. As membership expands, this initiative aims to accelerate the transition to low-carbon fertilizers, helping farmers and businesses reduce their environmental footprint without compromising agricultural productivity.
