Indigenous Community-Supporting Initiatives
The Indigenous Resilience Center Opened in Arizona
Francesca Mercurio — September 23, 2021The University of Arizona is launching a new cultural center to support Indigenous communities and address the global environmental crisis. The university has partnered with the organization Native American to create a constructive and interdisciplinary cultural center.
The space will be called the Indigenous Resilience Center. It will aid in fostering a relationship between Indigenous communities and the staff and students of the university's Agnes Helms Haury Program in Environment and Social Justice. The center will be run by Arizona University's faculty and staff, who will work closely with Indigenous leaders and the government to help address specific issues faced by Indigenous communities.
The center will largely focus on climate change and how it specifically impacts Indigenous people. Fostering initiatives surrounding agriculture, solar energy, and sustainable food sources will be at the forefront of the center's undertakings.
