The Nya Carnegiebryggeriet brewery, Carlsberg and the Swedish Environmental Research Institute (IVL) have teamed up to create a recycled wastewater beer that was conceived with sustainability in mind. Named PU:REST, the brew aims to encourage eco-friendly practices among beer manufacturers by outlining their ability to repurpose sewage water and make it both safe and drinkable.

While not the first wastewater beer of its kind, PU:REST is a pilsner made with organic malt and hops that are combined with repurposed water. The beer was launched last May and addresses the planet's declining fresh water supply while also showcasing the many wastewater advancements made in recent years.

PU:REST's wastewater ingredients were treated at the Hammarby water treatment plant in Sweden and the pilsner was available for a limited time last summer at select bars, festivals and retailers across the country.
