Awareness-Raising Green Beers

The Bright 'Alegae Bloom' Beer Draws Attention to Water Issues

'Alegae Bloom' is an unmistakable green beer created by Ohio’s Maumee Bay Brewing Company to raise awareness of algae blooms and issues surrounding potable water—particularly, an event in 2014 that caused the city of Toledo to have undrinkable water for days due to toxins from a Lake Erie algae bloom.

The algae-inspired beer takes the form of a kettle-soured double IPA that gets its distinctive green tint from matcha powder and kiwi.

While consumers have come to know green beer as a novelty for St. Patrick’s Day, Alegae Bloom sets itself apart for an important cause. To remind the public of the water crisis, the Maumee Bay Brewing Co. teamed up with the Ohio Environmental Council and a portion of the profits from the limited-edition beer will be put towards supporting water treatment preservation.
