The Waste Framework Directive has been provisionally revised by the EU, introducing stricter food waste reduction targets to strengthen the circular economy. The updated directive mandates a 10% reduction in food waste during processing and manufacturing and a 30% per capita reduction at retail and consumer levels by 2030. This aligns with the EU’s Sustainable Development Goal 12.3.

The EU will support member states through its Platform on Food Losses and Food Waste, providing best practices and funding for research and innovation. This initiative aims to reduce the €132 billion lost annually to food waste while promoting sustainable practices among food and beverage manufacturers.

To meet these targets, businesses are encouraged to improve operational efficiency, optimize supply chains, and enhance product shelf life. In addition to environmental benefits, reducing food waste can lower costs and improve brand reputation. The agreement awaits formal adoption by the European Parliament and the Council before implementation.
