Food Waste Awareness Initiatives
Vision Greens Highlights the Environmental Effects of Food Waste
Kalin Ned — October 29, 2024Vision Greens, a vertical farming company from Welland, Ontario, has partnered with Metro to promote awareness about the environmental effects of food waste through its inaugural 'Waste for Want' event. This initiative, held on October 19 at Metro’s Stoney Creek location, invited attendees to exchange their perishable food waste for a free package of Vision Greens lettuce. By collecting food waste, the event aimed to underscore the link between food waste in landfills and greenhouse gas emissions, as decomposing organic waste produces methane — a greenhouse gas significantly more potent than carbon dioxide.
Vision Greens promotes its sustainably grown, pesticide-free lettuce as an environmentally friendly choice. The brand utilizes a carbon-neutral process that saves substantial water and land resources while minimizing carbon emissions. Metro’s involvement aligns with its corporate responsibility goals, which prioritize reducing food waste and promoting climate-conscious practices.
