Chemical Recycling Efforts

The Healthcare Plastics Recycling Council Explores Clinical Options
Debra John — March 22, 2025The Healthcare Plastics Recycling Council (HPRC) is expanding its chemical recycling efforts to make healthcare plastic waste more sustainable. With the appointment of a new executive director, the organization is focusing on "increasing plastic collection by incorporating more clinical sites, such as dental offices, into its recycling programs; this expansion aims to boost regional recycling volumes and create more efficient waste management solutions."
Given that "many healthcare plastics are flexible and multilayered, chemical recycling has become a key area of focus." To address this challenge, HPRC is actively exploring innovative recycling technologies and identifying new opportunities for reuse. In addition, the group is working to support hospitals by enhancing sustainability standards through updated procurement guidelines and life cycle assessments.
By integrating these initiatives, HPRC aims to develop a more effective recycling system for healthcare plastics while promoting environmentally responsible waste management in the medical field.
