Plant-Based Milk Accessibility Initiatives
Scooter’s Coffee Removes Plant-Based Milk Upcharge
Georgia Wray Norsten — January 31, 2025Scooter’s Coffee has taken a significant step toward sustainability and accessibility by removing the upcharge for plant-based milk across all its 800+ locations in 29 states. This move follows similar decisions by Starbucks and Dutch Bros, making it easier for customers to choose environmentally friendly dairy alternatives. The decision was influenced by Mercy For Animals, advocating for equitable pricing and the reduced environmental impact of plant-based options.
By eliminating the surcharge, Scooter’s Coffee supports customers who are lactose intolerant and those seeking sustainable choices. Studies highlight that dairy production generates significantly more greenhouse gas emissions, requires far more water, and occupies greater land use compared to plant-based alternatives. Encouraging plant-based consumption aligns with broader sustainability efforts and consumer demand for more ethical food choices.
This shift reinforces the growing trend among major coffee chains to make plant-based milk more affordable. Mercy For Animals is now calling on other brands, including Dunkin’, to follow suit and remove similar upcharges nationwide.
