Sustainable Lumber Funding Initiatives

The Government of BC is Supporting Lumber Enterprises
Colin Smith — March 28, 2025The British Columbia government has allocated CA$1.23 million to three lumber enterprises in Revelstoke as part of its BC Manufacturing Jobs Fund initiative. This funding aims to support sustainable innovation and reduce reliance on old-growth logging. The recipients include Downie Timber Ltd., Selkirk Cedar, and Big Eddy Machine Shop. Downie Timber Ltd., a major sawmill in Revelstoke, received CA$825,000 to acquire and implement a new debarker system capable of processing small-profile logs. This investment is expected to safeguard approximately 229 jobs. Selkirk Cedar, a remanufacturing division of Downie Timber, was granted CA$250,000 to upgrade its laminator system for wood panels and posts, which will enhance wood fiber utilization and create three new jobs.
Big Eddy Machine Shop, specializing in forestry repair and railway maintenance equipment, received CA$152,270 to purchase a large CNC machine. This machine will improve milling efficiency, support a new product line, and add one job to the workforce. The funding aligns with the provincial government's broader objective of modernizing manufacturing companies and fostering innovation, particularly in communities impacted by economic challenges. Payments to the recipients are scheduled to commence within four weeks of signing their contribution agreements. This initiative reflects the government's commitment to advancing sustainable practices and supporting economic growth in the forestry sector.
