Large-Scale Wood Residue Conversions

Origin Materials' Transforms Scrap Waste Into Raw Material

Origin Materials, a leader in carbon-negative materials, has achieved a significant milestone by successfully converting wood residue feedstock into sustainable intermediates at its commercial-scale plant, Origin 1, in Sarnia, Ontario. "Sustainable intermediates” are materials or substances derived from environmentally friendly and resource-efficient processes used as foundational inputs in the manufacturing of final products."

Origin Materials' innovative process utilizes leftover organic material from forestry and timber manufacturing—such as wood chips, shavings, and sawdust—transforming it into valuable raw materials.

The company’s shift from corn starch-based production to sourcing locally from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified sources reflects its commitment to sustainability. The sustainable intermediates produced can replace petroleum in diverse applications, including apparel and high-performance polymers. As Origin Materials scales its biomass conversion technology, it reinforces its mission to drive the global transition towards sustainable materials, paving the way for a greener future.
