At its newly opened pilot facility, biomaterials company Modern Synthesis created a breakthrough class of microbial materials made with nanocellulose—and this revolutionary material has the potential to create nonwoven textiles from films to soft leathers. Additionally, the material is naturally biodegradable and it has advantages over many of the petrochemical-derived materials that are relied on today.

With this first-of-its-kind and patent-pending biotechnology platform, the company developed a way to turn sugar derived from agricultural waste into a solid and fine form of cellulose biomaterial that is naturally animal- and plastic-free.

Modern Synthesis says, "This new platform presents one of the biggest advances in the textile field since the industrial era, as it offers designers and fashion brands the ability to reduce their ecological footprint while introducing a novel look and feel into their products."
