Sanitary products such as sanitary napkins and diapers could get a whole lot more sustainable thanks to a new process and material that's aimed at being biodegradable. Developed by researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology, a new electrospinning process looks to create nanofibers that are created using cellulose acetate.

Being that cellulose acetate is a biodegradable material, the sanitary products would be able to be broken down in a much shorter amount of time rather than the 500 years existing products on the market take. When created, the products are capable of offering more surface area, are 10% more porous and are capable of absorbing more liquid than the petroleum-based products that are currently on the market.
