This biodegradable food packaging material is made out of clove oil and silver. Developed by Kaunas University of Technology researchers, the antimicrobial material is a healthier and eco-friendly way to package food. This addresses issues of waste and pollution as well as preventing food-borne illnesses.

The food packaging material is comprised of key ingredients clove ethereal oil and ionic silver particles, which provide additional antioxidants and antimicrobial properties. They keep food fresh while also allowing the material to break down over a period of two years. The Lithuanian university's Department of Polymer Chemistry and Technology team is working on making the invention commercially available soon. Larger scale adaptation of similar biodegradable upgrades could lead to smarter and cleaner cities.
