Carbon Emissions Reduction Projects

The Low Carbon Communities Program Promotes Green Energy

The Low Carbon Communities program, initiated by the Government of Nova Scotia, aims to support community-led projects that contribute to long-lasting greenhouse gas reductions. The program provides funding for projects that focus on low-carbon solutions in buildings, electricity, and transportation. Funding can be used for feasibility studies, designs, strategies, planning, education, engagement, and initiatives that demonstrate innovative clean energy solutions. The program is open to municipalities, First Nations bands and organizations, registered non-profits, post-secondary institutions, and businesses that benefit Nova Scotian communities.

In the 2024-2025 period, the Low Carbon Communities program is supporting 27 clean energy and low-carbon projects. These projects include solar power initiatives, electric vehicle infrastructure, district heating, and more. For example, the Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) Cumberland campus received $50,625 for a feasibility study on harnessing local geothermal resources, while the North Preston Medical Society was granted $75,000 for the design and planning of a retrofit to reduce energy costs at the North Preston Day Care Centre. The program aligns with Nova Scotia's climate change plan, "Our Climate, Our Future," which aims to create a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable future for all Nova Scotians.
