Beaver Island is set to open Michigan’s first community-based recycling redemption center with the help of an $86,000 grant from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy. The funding will establish the center at the Beaver Island Transfer Station, featuring two reverse vending machines for crushing glass, aluminum, and plastic containers.

The center will streamline recycling for the island’s remote community, especially during winter months when ferry services halt. The 24/7 facility aims to increase recycling rates by 45% by 2030, simplifying logistics and encouraging greater participation.

This pioneering project addresses Beaver Island’s unique recycling challenges and serves as a potential model for other remote communities. Future plans include adding a third vending machine for school fundraising and exploring flexible refund options for residents.
