Educational Recycling Apps

The 'Recycle Coach' app is now available to Chicago residents, providing easy access to waste management and recycling information. Launched through a partnership with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) and software firm Recycle Coach, the app aims to improve recycling participation by offering personalized waste collection schedules, recycling guidelines, and educational resources -- all at no cost to the city.

Chicago officials hope the app will reduce landfill waste, decrease contamination at recycling facilities, and lower greenhouse gas emissions. The initiative aligns with the city's broader climate action goals by helping residents better understand what can and cannot be recycled. Features like weekly recycling quizzes and disposal guidance for various materials encourage long-term behavioral changes.

With the backing of the IEPA, this program has the potential to expand statewide, significantly increasing the proper diversion of recyclables. As more communities adopt similar technology-driven solutions, cities like Chicago set a precedent for smarter, more sustainable waste management practices.
