Residents of Leduc, a city just south of Edmonton, are set to benefit from an innovative waste-sorting initiative that integrates artificial intelligence (AI) technology. The city's recent announcement outlines the incorporation of artificial intelligence technology into waste collection trucks, providing households with relevant information regarding their green cart pick-ups.

During the dumping process, the AI-equipped trucks will scan green carts. If the system detects inappropriate items, such as plastic bags, it captures an image linked to a specific household using GPS data. A postcard featuring the blurred image is then sent to the respective house, providing guidance on acceptable and unacceptable items for the green cart.

“We’re hoping that it educates residents of what to properly put in their organics cart,” said Michael Hancharyk, environmental manager for the City of Leduc.
