The Recycling Identifying Device (R.I.D.) has been created by Cohda Design as a solution for consumers who are looking for an easier way to decipher the packaging used for the products they purchase.
The device works by utilizing near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy to analyze the materials that the packaging is made of before providing feedback to the user to let them know if it's recyclable or not. The system could be used with an RFID card supplied by a local recycling authority to ensure optimal results for users without the need for Internet connectivity or a smartphone to perform tests.
