Becker County is launching a food waste recycling program to tackle organic waste, which makes up nearly 30% of landfill garbage. With support from a $178,000 grant from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, the initiative will introduce organics recycling bins at key locations and encourage participation from schools, restaurants, and grocery stores. Residents will receive compostable bags and kitchen pails to simplify collection, aiming to divert 150 to 200 tons of organic waste in the first year.

The program will accept a broad range of food waste, including fruits, vegetables, meat, dairy, and compostable packaging. Becker County is investing in sorting equipment and infrastructure to ensure efficient waste processing, with collected material transported to Glacial Ridge Compost Facility for final composting. This effort supports the county’s long-term goal of minimizing landfill contributions and promoting sustainable waste management practices.

Officials will assess participation rates and costs as the program expands to determine long-term viability. If successful, Becker County could significantly reduce its solid waste output, making it a model for rural waste reduction programs.
