Henrico County Launches Innovative Food Waste Collection Sites
Grace Mahas — October 31, 2024Henrico County's Environmental Action Resource Team (HEART) is advancing local sustainability efforts with its pioneering food waste composting program at two public use areas. The initiative accepts a comprehensive range of food scraps, including meat, bones, certified compostable plastics, and organic matter, which are then processed into agricultural-grade soil amendments through its partnership with NOPE. This program represents a significant step in municipal waste management, offering residents a free and accessible way to participate in environmental conservation while creating valuable resources for local agriculture and landscaping.
The program's launch strategy includes a specialized Pumpkin Composting Event, demonstrating how seasonal waste can be transformed into useful materials rather than contributing to landfill accumulation. By implementing daily collection services at both the Springfield Road and Charles City Road facilities, HEART is making sustainable waste management a convenient part of residents' daily routines.
