Self-Sorting Urban Recycling Solutions
The City of Calgary Eco Centres Simplify Waste Sorting
Jana Pijak — January 22, 2025The City of Calgary has revamped its self-sorting eco centres to make recycling and waste disposal more accessible and environmentally friendly. Open year-round at multiple city landfills, these centres now feature clear signage, an improved layout, and labeled drop-off zones to simplify sorting and ensure residents can easily dispose of items more responsibly.
The initiative reflects a shift from the old "Throw 'n' Go" name, focusing not just on convenience but on broader recycling and reuse opportunities. "We wanted a name that better reflects all the services available at these locations," explained Elias Tomaras, project manager of special projects for Calgary.
The stations accept a wide range of materials, including foam packaging, auto batteries, paints, chemicals, reusable household goods, and construction debris. Many items can be dropped off for free, while others, such as oversized waste, require a minimal $25 fee for loads under 250 kilos. This initiative supports Calgary’s commitment to sustainability, helping residents reduce landfill waste and embrace eco-conscious practices.
