Biffa has successfully reintroduced nearly 1,500 recycled bins and is working toward a future where all newly produced commercial bins are made entirely from old, unusable ones. This closed-loop recycling system ensures that discarded bins are given a second life.

The newly manufactured bins comprise 80% recycled high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and maintain the same strength, durability, and reliability as their virgin plastic counterparts. The process involves shredding old bins into flakes, which are then converted into pellets before being melted and molded into new bin structures.

"To pass strict quality and safety standards, the recycled bins are tested in the same way as the old ones, including being dropped and exposed to heat and cold. Customers can also be reassured that the bins will still be the famous Biffa red, just an eco-friendlier version," said Trevor Gardner, Head of Container Management at Biffa.

Biffa is prioritizing the recycling of its material stream, allowing it to achieve a more eco-conscious operational structure.
