Tesco has announced the relaunch of its Sustainable Pig Group (TSPG), strengthening its commitment to British agriculture and sustainability. Developed in partnership with Cranswick, TSPG will encompass all UK pork production methods, supporting farms of various sizes. Tesco estimates the group will generate £670 million over its first three years, providing stability and investment opportunities for farmers.

The initiative aligns with Tesco’s broader sustainability goals outlined in its 'Greenprint for UK Farming' report. Through innovative forums, the group will promote collaboration, improve welfare standards, and enhance farming practices. Incentives include improved farrowing conditions and reduced stocking densities alongside a pricing model combining cost of production with market-based bonuses.

TSPG aims to triple in size within three years, producing all Tesco core fresh pork and sausages. This follows an 18-month period during which Tesco increased its British pork supply by 20%, emphasizing its commitment to sustainable agriculture. As Ashwin Prasad, Tesco’s Chief Commercial Officer, states, “This initiative enables farmers to invest in welfare, sustainability, and efficiency improvements, driving long-term resilience in the pig farming sector.”

Through partnerships with Harper Adams University and industry leaders like Cranswick, Tesco is setting a benchmark for sustainable and ethical farming, benefiting producers and consumers.
