Gail's Hot Cross Bun Bacon Buttie Helps to Reduce Food Waste

References: independent & gailsbread

Bakery chain Gail's is introducing new products made from food waste, including a hot cross bun bacon buttie that helps to give a new life to day-old hot cross buns. Although hot cross buns are associated with being sweet, this creation is enhanced with streaky bacon, maple syrup and butter to create a sweet and salty combination of flavors.

As part of its commitment to eco-friendly baking, the artisan bakery chain plans to introduce at least 25 new products and is ultimately working towards becoming a zero-waste business. Gail's is also turning baguettes into croutons and creating crackers from leftover cheese rinds.

Like Gail's, a variety of businesses are looking into the ways that they can minimize their own waste streams and creatively repurpose their own leftover ingredients or by-products.
