The Matawa First Nations Management launched an Animal Services Pilot Project in early 2024 with the aim of improving animal welfare and promoting safer, healthier communities within First Nations. This initiative addresses the long-standing challenges in managing animal populations, particularly dogs, in these communities.

With support from Indigenous Services Canada, the Animal Services Pilot Project focuses on providing veterinary care, conducting spay/neuter clinics, and educating community members about animal wellness. Since its inception, the pilot has made considerable progress, including performing hundreds of surgeries, exams, and vaccinations, while also addressing emergencies such as a dog parvovirus outbreak in Nibinamik First Nation.

The project works towards restoring connections between First Nations people and animals, which have been severely eroded due to the impact of colonization.
