The Upper Grand District School Board (UGDSB) has made significant strides in prioritizing and investing in solar energy developments as part of its sustainability initiatives. Solar panels have been installed on the roofs of 45 UGDSB schools, with plans for further expansion. This initiative is part of the UGDSB's Energy Conservation Demand Management Plan, which outlines strategies for improving energy efficiency and reducing consumption. The plan includes the installation of a 100-kilowatt solar system at Taylor Evans Public School, in addition to the existing 12-kilowatt system. The UGDSB aims to electrify its sources of heat with heat pump technology, offsetting increased electricity demand with solar generation.

The UGDSB's commitment to renewable energy extends to new school constructions as well. For example, the new Guelph High School, set to open in September 2026, will incorporate solar power as part of its sustainability efforts. The school board also seeks opportunities to upgrade HVAC systems with more efficient technologies, such as heat pumps, to reduce the carbon footprint of its buildings. The UGDSB's sustainability advisory committee, which includes input from high school students, plays a crucial role in advising the board on actions and goals under the umbrella of sustainability. This comprehensive approach underscores the UGDSB's dedication to leading through sustainability and encouraging staff and students to participate in sustainability initiatives.
