Efficient Austrian Railway Initiatives
Siemens is Working to Improve LEDs at Passenger Stations
Colin Smith — January 31, 2025Siemens Mobility and the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) have embarked on a comprehensive project to enhance the efficiency of over 1,000 passenger stations across Austria. The collaboration focuses on implementing the European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 2, which digitally monitors and controls train operations in real-time. This system optimizes train distances, direction, and speed, significantly increasing route capacity and ensuring more reliable, punctual, and safe train services. The project aims to double the capacity of Austria's rail system by 2040 to accommodate rising passenger numbers and support the country's climate goals by shifting transportation away from roads1.
As part of this initiative, Siemens and ÖBB plan to establish 21 ETCS Radio Block Centers (RBCs) by 2038, providing fail-safe coverage for Austria's high-level rail network. The ETCS technology enables shorter headways and higher speeds, contributing to energy savings and environmental protection. This digital transformation is expected to make the Austrian railway system one of the most modern and efficient in the world, enhancing the overall attractiveness of public transport and supporting sustainable mobility solutions.
