Improved Safety eBike Projects
Researchers at Dutch University TU Delft are Working on 'SenseBike'
Colin Smith — January 21, 2025The TU Delft SenseBike, developed by researchers at the Delft University of Technology, is an innovative e-bike equipped with advanced laser sensors and scanners. The bike collects data on the range, direction, and elevation of both moving and stationary objects, such as cyclists, pedestrians, and cars. This data is used to create a three-dimensional picture of its surroundings, aiming to improve the understanding of road user behavior and potentially develop applications to help cyclists avoid obstacles and enhance safety.
The SenseBike is fitted with LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology, commonly used in autonomous vehicles, to map its environment by detecting moving objects. The data collected is processed using a labeling technique that associates visible objects with descriptions, such as "tree," "cyclist," and "traffic light," which could help car drivers recognize and avoid cyclists. The researchers plan to make this data publicly available to benefit academics and entrepreneurs, with the goal of developing AI algorithms to predict cyclists' behavior and improve road safety.
