Perovskite Solar Cell Factories
Sekisui Chemical is Cquiring Sharp's Sakai City Factory
Colin Smith — January 9, 2025Sekisui Chemical Co., Ltd. has announced its acquisition of Sharp Corporation's main factory in Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture. This facility will be transformed into a production hub for perovskite solar cell technology. Sekisui Chemical plans to begin mass production of these next-generation solar cells by 2027, facilitating Japan's push to expand its renewable energy capacity. The Development Bank of Japan will hold a 14% stake in the venture. The project is backed by Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and aligns with the country's decarbonization goals.
The revamped factory will focus on manufacturing innovative, lightweight, and flexible solar panels designed for use on buildings with low load-bearing capacity. This includes rooftops and curved surfaces where traditional solar panels are unsuitable. Perovskite solar cells are considered a breakthrough in the field due to their potential to significantly enhance solar power generation. The initiative aims not only to meet domestic energy needs but also to secure a competitive edge in the global renewable energy market.
