Rio Tinto and Hydro have officially partnered to experiment with new carbon capture technologies that could benefit the aluminum electrolysis process. Under the agreement, both companies will share research, development, and testing data, covering everything from laboratory experiments with external technology providers to larger-scale pilot programs at operational sites. Their combined investment of $45 million over five years will fuel these efforts, with research conducted primarily at Rio Tinto’s European facilities and Hydro’s headquarters in Norway.

“Hydro is accelerating our ambitious roadmap to achieve net-zero aluminum production by 2050 or sooner, advancing solutions across every step of our value chain—from mine to metal,” Hydro President and CEO Eivind Kallevik says. “Carbon capture technologies are critical to decarbonizing existing smelters, and our partnership with Rio Tinto will amplify efforts to develop fit-for-purpose solutions that can accelerate the aluminum industry’s transition towards net-zero production.”
