Sustainable CRM Production Initiatives

The MECALO Project Focuses on Using Renewable Hydrogen

The Horizon Europe-funded MECALO project is at the forefront of sustainable innovation, aiming to transform the production of critical raw materials (CRMs) like silicon (Si) and manganese (Mn). These materials are essential for Europe’s clean technology ambitions, yet their production has historically relied on carbon-intensive methods.

MECALO employs groundbreaking renewable hydrogen and carbon-looping technologies to achieve CO2-neutral CRM production. By replacing fossil carbon with renewable hydrogen in metallurgical processes, the initiative could reduce CO2 emissions by up to 95%, saving 33 million tonnes annually by 2050. This approach also aims to replace 9 million tonnes of coal imports with 15 billion Nm³ of hydrogen.

Coordinated by SINTEF, MECALO unites 15 partners from eight EU countries to address Europe’s reliance on CRM imports and establish a more resilient, sustainable supply chain. As a blueprint for decarbonizing energy-intensive industries, MECALO aligns with the EU’s Critical Raw Materials Act and climate neutrality goals, positioning Europe as a leader in sustainable industrial practices.
