Carbon capture technology leader Capsol and decarbonization company Sumitomo are launching a new CO2 capture demonstration at Mälarenergi’s biomass-powered combined heat and power (bio-CHP) plant in Västerås, Sweden. This project builds on their previous success at Växjö Energi AB’s biomass facility and is set to begin this month.

The demo will utilize Capsol’s mobile CO2 capture unit, powered by a Hot Potassium Carbonate (HPC) process, and its EoP® heat recovery technology. The HPC system captures CO2 from exhaust gases using a non-toxic potassium carbonate solution, achieving a carbon capture rate of over 90%. This technology produces high-purity CO2 suitable for storage. The CO2 can also be reused and generates sustainable low-temperature heat as a byproduct.

With plans to scale up to capture 400,000 tonnes of CO2 annually, this collaboration aligns with Capsol’s goal to reduce emissions globally.
