Emissions-Preventing Stones
The CarbFix Project is an Endeavor in Carbon Dioxide Storage
Alyson Wyers — June 26, 2016There have been plenty of examples of creative construction professionals using carbon neutral and even carbon negative building materials, but the CarbFix Project is a new way to look at carbon dioxide storage. CO2 emissions and greenhouse gases are a main contribution to climate change, so managing their levels are paramount in establishing a more sustainable environment.
Based in Iceland, Reykjavik Energy and a number of universities are teaming up to capture carbon emissions and turn it into storable stone, preventing emissions from being released into the atmosphere. The carbon dioxide storage process takes place at the Hellisheidi geothermal power plant. In the future, it would be interesting to see if the carbon stone could also be used for construction purposes.
