LG Chem is tapping Reifenhäuser, a manufacturer of extrusion machines, to drive innovation in recyclable packaging films. This collaboration focuses on developing high-performance films that meet the growing demand for sustainable packaging solutions. This partnership follows the pair's showcasing of a Machine Direction Oriented (MDO)-PE film that is only 18 micrometers (μm).

A key goal of the partnership is to reduce material consumption by advancing downgauging techniques to match the performance levels of traditional PET-PE laminates.

The companies have already made significant strides, having successfully produced 18 μm MDO-PE films without PFAS additives, a critical step toward eliminating harmful chemicals from packaging. These films were tested in extended runs at the Reifenhäuser Technical Center, demonstrating stability and reproducibility. The films were then printed and processed into fully functional finished pouches, further proving the viability of this innovative solution.
