Community Composting Initiatives

An Iowa City Retirement Community is Championing Sustainability
Georgia Wray Norsten — March 21, 2025Iowa City’s Oaknoll retirement community shows that age is no barrier to environmental action. With a bold composting initiative supported by resident donations and a city climate grant, Oaknoll has already diverted over 11,000 pounds of food waste from landfills in just three months. Their goal is a remarkable 70,000 pounds in one year -- transforming waste into nutrient-rich garden compost rather than methane-emitting landfill matter.
The effort is part of a broader push led by the Oaknoll Sustainability Committee, a resident-driven group focused on building a greener future. From improving recycling systems to promoting electric vehicle awareness and expanding community gardens, the committee steadily embeds sustainability into daily life. Their work reflects a growing sense of environmental responsibility among residents and staff alike.
Looking ahead, Oaknoll aims to reduce pesticide use and expand plant-based dining options, aligning the community’s operations with its eco-conscious values. Their initiative sets a powerful example of grassroots climate leadership at any age.
