Plastic-Free Supermarket Aisles

While there are a growing number of zero-waste stores that are being built from the ground up, it can be a challenge for existing retailers to adopt the same kind of sustainable strategies into their existing framework—but Ekoplaza in Amsterdam is setting a new precedent for supermarkets by integrating a plastic-free section into its store.

Ekoplaza launched an entirely plastic-free supermarket aisle that contains hundreds of products for purchase. In place of plastic, the items in the aisle are displayed in glass, metal and cardboard containers. While some consumers may remain skeptical about the removal of all plastic-like packages from the aisle, Ekoplaza only features alternatives like plant-based biofilm that break down in the compost in a matter of weeks.

As far as some of the products that are featured in this grocery store section, Ekoplaza demonstrates that there are much more sustainable solutions to selling everything from meat and grains to dairy and fresh produce.
